Freedom and Choice

New legislation came into force on 6th April 2015 which allows more flexibility around how defined contribution (DC) pension savings e.g. personal pensions, can be brought into payment once the minimum pension age of 55 has been reached.

Approaching Retirement

If you are considering retirement and are over 55 please contact the Pension Helpdesk who will arrange for an estimate to be sent to you.

Who Can Join

If you are between 16 and 75, have a contract of employment of 3 months or more and work for one of the employers who take part in the LGPS then you will automatically be put into the Pension scheme.

How much will it cost?

Your contribution rate is based on the pensionable pay that you receive. Your employer is responsible for determining your contribution rate.

Tax Allowances

Your LGPS pension is taxable, but your lump sum is paid tax free. Whether you pay tax when you retire depends on the amount of your pension and your personal circumstances.

What benefits will I get?

How your pension is calculated depends on when you joined the scheme - before April 2014 the scheme was a final salary scheme, after this date the LGPS changed to a Career Average Re-valued Earnings (CARE) scheme.

Can I transfer pension benefits into the LGPS?

In most cases it is possible to transfer benefits in from other pension scheme.

Can I increase my benefits?

There are a number of ways in which you can increase your benefits, read more about how.

What happens if I die in service?

If you die in service while an active member of the scheme, and before age 75, a lump sum death grant of three times your Assumed Pensionable Pay will be payable.

Leaving before retirement

The benefits that you are entitled to on leaving the scheme depend on when you joined the scheme and the length of time that you were in the scheme.

When can I retire?

If you joined the LGPS after April 2014 then you need to have at least 2 years service (including any transferred pension rights) to be eligible for pension benefits.
